NEW YORK – Drugstore operator Rite Aid Corp. said Wednesday it reduced its losses in the fiscal first quarter as it cut spending, but its loss was narrower than Wall Street expected, sending its shares higher.

The report came a day after rival Walgreen Co., the biggest U.S. drugstore chain, posted disappointing quarterly results, pushing down shares of Rite Aid to their lowest price in a year.

The company said 12 million shoppers have enrolled in its new Wellness+ customer rewards program, which it launched two months ago.

The Camp Hill, Pa., chain also maintained its fiscal 2011 profit and sales forecasts and did not announce any new store closings.

Sammons will remain chairwoman of the company for two more years. Her retirement and Standley’s promotion were announced in January.

Revenue in stores open at least a year fell 1 percent. At those stores, pharmacy revenue fell 0.9 percent and sales of other items, like cosmetics and food, fell 1.3 percent. Those sales are considered an important measurement of retailer health because they exclude results at stores that have opened or closed in the last year.

According to Thomson Reuters, analysts on average expected a loss of 14 cents per share and $6.4 billion in revenue.

Wednesday Rite Aid shares rebounded, rising 7 cents, or 6.9 percent,Juicy Couture belts, to $1.08 in afternoon trading. Earlier they rose 10 percent.

Rite Aid said it lost $73.7 million, or 9 cents per share, in the quarter ended May 29. That compares with $98.4 million, or 11 cents per share, a year ago. Revenue fell 2 percent to $6.39 billion from $6.53 billion as the company closed stores and dealt with a weak economy.

Three years ago, Rite Aid paid $2.36 billion for 1,850 Brooks Eckerd drugstores. Those stores haven’t done well, and the company has closed about 300 locations over the last two years. The company is billions of dollars in debt.

In the current fiscal year, the company expects to lose $355 million to $570 million, or 41 cents to 65 cents per share, on $25.2 billion to $25.6 billion in revenue. Analysts estimate a loss of 52 cents per share and $25.42 billion in revenue.

Rite Aid said revenue in stores open at least one year improved in March and April but fell in May and is down in June as well. A year ago drugstores experienced a boom in sales of flu shots and flu treatments because of the swine flu outbreak. Sales of allergy treatments were also weak this year.

Rite Aid runs 4,767 stores in 31 states and Washington, D.C. It closed 15 stores during the quarter, relocated eight others, remodeled one, and opened two. By the end of its fiscal year,Diesel, it will cut its store count to about 4,700.

Rite Aid said it cut its costs by about 5 percent to $1.62 billion. The company said labor and distribution costs fell, although some of those decreases were temporary. It also saved money by closing 58 stores over the last 12 months.

Rite Aid is also preparing for a change in leadership. On Thursday, Mary Sammons will retire as CEO after seven years. President and Chief Operating Officer John Standley will become Rite Aid’s CEO. Standley is a former CEO of the Pathmark chain, and became president and COO in September 2008 as part of a management shake-up.
